Arizona Hauntings

By Nathan L Mauzy

Deep in the desert, beyond the dark mountains, there have long been legends of hauntings throughout Arizona. Down in the deep, abandoned mines, ghostly miners still work the ore and walk the tunnels. Long dead cowboys and native americans still return to the mountains and valleys on occasion. Even the Grand Canyon has it's ghosts. And shadowy forms still visit some of the old hotels such as the Copper Queen in Bisbee.

The Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee was completed in 1902 and has served the old mining community nestled in the southwestern Arizona mountains ever since. Guests come from all over the world, and apparently a few have never left. The third floor is the location of the best known haunting at the hotel.

The staff refer to this ghostly presence as Julia. She pulls the blankets off of sleepers, and even has been reported to tickle the feet of male guests while they are in bed. A female voice is also heard when no women are nearby. The ghost of a child is said to haunt the 4th floor, running up and down hallways, and in general doing little mischievous things such as a child would do.

Fort Lowell was a U.S. Army post in the mid to late 1800's just outside of Tucson. It was a hub for soldiers to defend against Apache attacks in the region, and a base for supplies sent to other military outposts. After it's closing in 1891, it became the home of squatters for some years, and then was left to the elements. Eventually the City of Tucson took over, restored what was left and opened a museum and a park. However strange things had started to be reported even when it was a ruin.

In 1900, the local newspaper reported that locals were shooting at a ghostly soldier they saw around the ruins, which would vanish when the shooting started. Over the decades witnesses have seen old time soldiers walking or riding horses around Ft. Lowell park. Residents of the houses around the park reportedly often saw and heard an ghost wagon with phantom horses and drivers passing by towards the old fort. The sightings have continued to the present day.

Under the old mining town of Jerome are numerous mines now closed off which in their heyday brought forth millions of dollars worth of precious metals, mostly copper. A story has long been circulated in town about a unfortunate miner who lost his head in a mining accident. His head was recovered, but the poor man's body fell down a shaft and was never found.

Shortly after the accident miners began claiming to hear footsteps when no one else was there. A few even saw a headless man walking through the tunnels. Many local residents claim "Headless Charlie" is still walking the dark, abandoned mine looking for his head.

The state of Arizona is home to many ghostly legends. More hauntings from the copper state can be found at Haunted Places in Arizona
