Is my house haunted? What are the signs that I have a ghost? Do all ghosts do the same thing... or is each haunting, apparition, or energy a little bit different? And what about wishful thinking? Is it possible that my imagination is a bit overactive... or is it really possible that I have a haunting, or an apparition or even a friend of family member that is trying to communicate with me, and I'm just not yet ready to see? Any of these questions sound familiar? The truth is, trying to figure out whether a house or location is genuinely haunted, rather than a byproduct of very "earthly" explanations, can be a very difficult thing to assess. People always have their own motivations wrapped up in the experience, and it's often hard to change someone's mind, either way... that they've either got a genuine paranormal type of experience going on, or that they may have some wishful thinking at play, or some some other more psychologically grounded type of phenomena to overcome. The funny thing is, sometimes a professional "ghost hunter" (a term I hate) can actually make your haunting experience even HARDER to understand, as most people in this profession bring their own baggage, their own hopes, expectation and spiritual "silliness" to the lives of folks who report strange happenings. That said... there is something very magical, and mysterious about exploring the unknown, and I'd be lying to you to say that EVERY new potential haunting experience isn't incredibly exciting to talk about, for me. (when you do what you love... and you LOVE what you do, it's incredibly exciting to explore the depth, and detail to ALL this stuff, and I for one LOVE to share my passion and perspective for everything "paranormal". Some of the STRONGEST signs your home may be haunted? Strange (and often strong) smells emanating from specific rooms or areas of the home that are associated with personalities of previous inhabitants, or friends and family members who you know are crossed over. (and suspect may be behind the events) Hot and cold spots that are very location specific. (often occupying a frozen pocket of space that is anomalous to the temperature around it) Unusual electrical patterns that seem to defy convention - lights turning on and off, TV's going on and off, and even more strongly suggestive of paranormal activity, unplugged electrical devices mysteriously lighting up. (don't laugh - it DOES happen, and I've personally witnessed 8-10 legitimate cases) Phone calls from the dead. This sounds crazy and it is... but it DOES happen in houses that have significant haunting activity, and whole books have been written about this unsettling phenomena, by very serious and skeptical paranormal researchers. (did you know that Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, was working on a telephone to communicate with the other side before he died? It's true... and many other scientists have done incredible work in this area, although it's rarely reported simply because it sounds too hard to believe!) The more of these signs you have - the more likely it is that you may have a genuine paranormal experience happening in your home, rather than something that's more easily explained by natural (or mischievous) human causes. If you think something is taking place that defies conventional causes - dive in and explore! (contrary to what you may read elsewhere, there is very little danger while exploring ethereal encounters - and you DON'T need to wait to have someone "official" tell you you do, or don't have a ghost. (something I've seen disappoint far too many people to count - and quite often, opinions from people I wouldn't trust myself in the first place) And remember... you do NOT need a professional ghost hunter, or some celebrity, or even a consensus community opinion that you DO have a ghost, to want to explore further on your own.
